Office 365 Setup

The steps to configure DNS Made Easy with Office 365 are as follows:

  1. Access the DNS Records for your domain
  2. Add a record to verify your domain
  3. Add DNS records for Exchange Online
  4. Add DNS records for Lync Online
  5. Add the additional record required for Office 365

If you’ve closed Office 365, start by gathering the information you need to create the DNS records required for your domain.

There is a reference article that lists the records and a short description of what each is used for here.

You may need to add some or all of the records outlined below based on what services you will be using for this domain.

 

USER ACTION 1: Access the DNS Records for your domain WHAT YOU WILL SEE
1. Select the “DNS” Menu, select “Managed DNS” 4
2. Select a domain from the either the “Recently Updated Domains” box, or start typing the domain name in the text box on the “Select Domain” tab 4
3. Select the “Records” tab 4

 

USER ACTION 2: Add a record to verify your domain WHAT YOU WILL SEE
1. Add a new TXT record. Under the TXT Record section, click the plus sign to add a new record. 4
2. Add the data for your record (which you would view in your Office 365 control panel). Example ONLY:

  • Domain: exampledomain.com
  • Name: @ (Leave Blank)
  • Data: your_verification_string_here A text string provided by Office 365. The Office 365 Add a domain wizard provides the value that you use to create this record.

USER ACTION 3: Add DNS records for Exchange Online WHAT YOU WILL SEE
1. Create a new MX record. Under the MX Record section, click the plus sign to add a new record. 4
2. Add the data provided specific to your record (which you would view in your Office 365 control panel). Example:

  • Domain: exampledomain.com
  • Name: @ (Leave Blank)
  • Server: your_MX_token_here.mail.protection.outlook.com. (including the trailing dot)
  • MX Level: 0

3. Remove any obsolete MX records. If you have an old MX record for this domain that routes email to another location, delete it.
4. Add a new CNAME record. Under the CNAME Record section, click the plus sign to add a new record. 4
5. Add the data for your record (which you would view in your Office 365 control panel).

  • Domain: exampledomain.com
  • Name: autodiscover
  • Alias to: autodiscover.outlook.com. (including the trailing dot)

6. Add a new TXT record. Under the TXT Record section, click the plus sign to add a new record. 4
7. Add the data for your record (which you would view in your Office 365 control panel).

  • Domain: exampledomain.com
  • Name: @ (Leave Blank)
  • Data:v=spf1 include:spf.protection.outlook.com -all

8. Duplicate this exact record as an SPF type record. Under the SPF Record section, click the plus sign to add a new record. Add the same data for the record. 4

 

USER ACTION 4: Add DNS records for Lync Online WHAT YOU WILL SEE
1. Create a new SRV record. Under the SRV Record section, click the plus sign to add a new record. 4
2. Add the data for your record (which you would view in your Office 365 control panel).

  • Domain: exampledomain.com
  • Name/Service and Protocol: _sipfederationtls._tcp
  • Priority: 100
  • Weight: 1
  • Port: 5061
  • Host/Target: sipfed.online.lync.com. (including the trailing dot)

3. Add the data for the additional SRV record (which you would view in your Office 365 control panel).

  • Domain: exampledomain.com
  • Name/Service and Protocol: _sip._tls
  • Priority: 100
  • Weight: 1
  • Port: 443
  • Host/Target: sipdir.online.lync.com. (including the trailing dot)

4. Add a new CNAME record. Under the CNAME Record section, click the plus sign to add a new record. 4
5. Add the data for your record (which you would view in your Office 365 control panel).

  • Domain: exampledomain.com
  • Name: sip
  • Alias to: sipdir.online.lync.com. (including the trailing dot)

6. Add a new CNAME record. Under the CNAME Record section, click the plus sign to add a new record. 4
7. Add the data for your record (which you would view in your Office 365 control panel).

  • Domain: exampledomain.com
  • Name: lyncdiscover
  • Alias to: webdir.online.lync.com. (including the trailing dot)

  • Alias to: clientconfig.microsoftonline-p.net. (including the trailing dot)
